A & D Grip Rentals Inc. Allan (Al U) Uglanica graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1970 with a degree in Radio and Television Arts. He then worked in educational television at both M.E.E.T.A. and Access Alberta. He also worked in a variety of jobs ranging from mining, to sports facility management and commercial fishing.
Al began working in the British Columbia film industry in 1987. He became a member of I.A.T.S.E. Local 891 in 1988 and has remained active in the local in various capacities: 6 years as Member-at-Large, 2 years as Vice-President and presently as a Trustee of the Health and Welfare Committee.
Although presently specializing in the field of commercials and music videos, Al has worked on many different productions varying from movies of the week, to mini-series, episodic television and feature films. His grip department positions have ranged from Grip, to Leadman Set-up, Rigging Grip, Best Boy Grip and present position of Key Grip.
During the past 5 years, Al has spent time taking volunteers out on film sets in order to pass on knowledge and skill in a hands -on working environment. He has taught a number of 2 day grip workshops for The Northwest Film and Video Training Centre in Vancouver, B.C. Al was also involved with other members of I.A.T.S.E. 891, The Government of B.C., and the British Columbia Institute of Technology in developing a Grip course for the I.A.T.S.E. / B.C. Government Apprenticeship Program.
